About the Covert Bailey Method

Developed by fitness expert Covert Bailey, this method uses a measuring tape to estimate body fat percentage based on key body circumferences. It’s simple, requiring only a few measurements taken at their widest points, and is accurate within about 2% of advanced methods like hydrostatic weighing. Formulas adjust for gender and age (≤30 or >30 years) to reflect differences in fat distribution.

How to Measure

Use a flexible tape measure against bare skin, keeping it snug but not tight. Measure in a relaxed state, and take each reading at the widest point unless noted. Here’s where to measure:

For Men:

  • Hips: Around the buttocks at the widest point, typically where your pants sit.
  • Waist: At the navel level, not sucking in or pushing out your stomach.
  • Forearm: At the widest point between the wrist and elbow, usually near the middle.
  • Wrist: Just below the wrist bone, where it’s smallest.

For Women:

  • Hips: Around the buttocks at the widest point, including the fullest part of your hips.
  • Thigh: Around one thigh at its widest point, usually just below the glutes.
  • Calf: Around one calf at its widest point, typically midway between ankle and knee.
  • Wrist: Just below the wrist bone, where it’s smallest.

Tip: Measure twice to confirm consistency. Use the same spots each time you recalculate.

Healthy Ranges
